Learn the basics of woodworking and try your hand at furniture design in Bien Hecho’s signature “Intro to Woodworking” course for adults, perfect for anyone new to woodworking or in need of a refresher. Starting with the basic properties of wood and continuing through machine use, joinery and the construction of furniture, this course will give you a thorough understanding of the principles of woodworking.
You will complete a cutting board and a side table that you built and finished yourself; each is a great way to show off your skills or give as gifts to friends and family! No prior woodworking experience is necessary, and the cost of wood, tools, safety equipment and materials is included in the course fee.
Course structure
This introductory course will meet for 6 weeks from 6:30pm-9:30pm, at the home of Bien Hecho Academy in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
First class: Properties of Wood; Machines of the trade I
Second class: Machines of the trade II; design basics; lumber selection
Third class: Dressing lumber; Joinery I: types and techniques
Fourth class: Joiner II: practical application
Fifth class: Table legs; beginning your table
Sixth class: Finishing your table
Instructor
Eva Sturm-Gross, Artist/Woodworker
Eva Sturm-Gross is an artist and woodworker originally from Vermont. She graduated from Oberlin College with a degree in studio art and religion. She has studied and worked at multiple craft schools around the country and her prints and sculptures have been exhibited nationally. She loves all things wood and trees but is at heart devoted to whittling. Eva is interested in art as a form of creative exegesis by which to reinterpret traditional texts.

Refund Policy
Covid-19 Refund Policy (still in effect updated 12/2023): ALL SALES ARE FINAL. If for some reason we need to postpone your purchased workshop before class takes place, we will gladly hold your space or offer a full amount voucher which can be redeemable at anytime. If there is a shutdown (city, pandemic etc…) after your class has started, we will resume and pick up from where we left off once it is safe for all of us to be back in the shop. GIFT CERTIFICATES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE
Pre-Covid Policy: All refunds are subject to a 6% processing fee. Refunds for classes are only offered up to 7 days before your class begins. Alternatively, you can receive a 100% refund in Bien Hecho Academy store credit, which can be applied to a future class. No refunds will be offered for class withdrawals less than 7 days before your class begins. GIFT CERTIFICATES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE
